WAVE 5

Since this Wave has an all new package art, I do want to address the look and design that has been put together. The card presentation is actually pretty nice. The figures look better in the none pose they are in. They don't have that awkward look that the Wave 1 - 4 had at times. The green used to try and attract the eye actually works well too. When we first saw images online, the green looked very neon. Thankfully it isn't. The last thing is the new logo. I personally don't like it and think it's an over all stupid idea. There was no real reason to change it that a fan will ever understand. I'd like to see it changed back, but I can live with it. Over all to take from my rating system, I'd give this package style a 8 1/2. It's a good effort. The figure placement is perfect, but the card design needs more work.

BARREL ROLL
Barrel Roll is packaged with Air Assault glider in the new green Spy Troops style packaging. The figure it's self has a great over all presentation. You get a good look at what your buying.

Opening the package you are met with some packaging you are not familar with when it comes to G.I.Joe. There is a 2 part packaging holding everything in place. It is all well packed. Some parts of the glider such as the missles are held a little too secure by the packaging. I had to cut these free to get them loose. The figure comes right out. All other parts come out pretty easy and only have tape over them to hold them in place. Barrel Roll comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

I like this figure. His glider is very cool too. The detail that was put into this design really show. The Spy Troops idea however doesn't work right to me with Barrel Roll. The glider holds the parts fine, but for the figure, everything looks too bulky. I'd like to see an actual Cobra figure pack come out made exactly like the card art depicting what Barrel Roll is suppose to look like.

Barrel Roll gets none other than 10 Cobras. His accessories is only a part of the grading. Besides that, Barrel Roll is a very cool figure that stand alone by himself. He is one you should get. Even if you aren't buying the new figures, buy this one and give him a chance. After you do hold him next to your classic line. You find yourself enjoying this truely great figure!

BURN OUT
Burn Out is packaged with Chief Torpedo in the new green Spy Troops style packaging. The figure it's self has a great over all presentation. You get a good look at what your buying.

Opening the package you are met with some packaging you are not familar with when it comes to G.I.Joe. There is a 2 part packaging holding everything in place. It is all well packed. The Spy Troops gear is on the bottom part of the packaging. Some pieces are held in with tape. Some other accessories are held in place by the package which can be a little tricky to come out. The figure comes right out. Burn Out comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

We have a new Dreadnok! This one is great. The sculpting is very nice. The Spy Troops idea with Burn Out is not too great though. His hair sticks out from the back of the helmet which doesn't look right. The rest of the parts just doesn't add up to really giving him a look where you'd feel comfortable thinking that G.I.Joe could actually mistake him for a regular MP.

I'll give Burn Out 10 Cobras. The Spy Troops gear isn't a factor in how cool the figure is. The gear can be discarded or used if you'd like. Burn Out is just too cool of a Dreadnok to pass up on.

CHIEF TORPEDO
Chief Torpedo is packaged with Burn Out in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Cheif Torpedo comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

Cheif Torpedo as Hasbro is calling him now is a decent figure. He has a very well sculpted design. He's just a little plain. His head sculpt and color sort of has a corpse look about him. The breathing equipment also would be nice if it was more interactive.

Torpedo gets a simple 9 Cobras. Everything I mentioned is really rather minor, but in this case it's not minor enough. These are really things that can be fixed. The head sculpt does look fine and really it's the paint job done on him that does the damage to his looks. The plain outfit though, I don't know what can be done with him. By no means does this mean to say "don't get this figure". You should get him because he is a really great action figure.

COBRA C.L.A.W.S. COMMANDER
Cobra C.L.A.W.S. Commander is packaged with Cross Hair in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

C.L.A.W.S. Commander comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

Here's a really nice figure that's well sculpted, looks very good as a bad guy, but just doesn't fit the role he's put in. He looks like something for the Crimson Skies role play series more than a commanding officier. In other words he looks more like a pilot than someone commanding a whole battalion of soldiers on the ground. Don't get me wrong, he's really great figure design. He has a really menacing look. I see so much potential for custom use as well.

I give Cobra C.L.A.W.s Commander 9 1/2 Cobras. The thought for taking half a point off is because his look seems misplaced for who he is suppose to be. I don't necessarily take points off for accessories, unless the accessories is suppose to be the main point of the figure, but I do take points off for characterization. The story behind a character or history in some cases is very important. Some try to say it isn't, but in the end when all bets are off, you'll find it hard to find people who actually totally can forget the whole package you're presented with. This does not mean for you to pass this figure up. Get him, and get multiples. Multiples so you can use him for customs. Maybe even use this guy to make you a Wild Weasel that's better than the one in the new Rattler.

CROSS HAIR
Cross Hair is packaged with Cobra C.L.A.W.S. Commander in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Cross Hair comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

The body of this figure looks like a great outfit for a G.I.Joe marksman. The trouble I have with this guy is his face. The head sculpt just looks unfinished. It looks like he still has extra clay packed on his face. His mouth and jaw has a weird swollen look. By himself he'd be ok, but Hasbro went and produced card art that gives you a second guideline to adhere to.

I'll give him 9 1/2 Cobras. There's some fans that just discard what the package presents to some point. Most fans though do take in what they see and it adds to the character. When you have a look on the package, then the figure almost looks like a whole different idea, it does come off a little strange. Long time fans can remember back to the very first line when we saw the paintings of Grunt, Zap, and a few others, we thought they looked pretty cool. Then when we saw the figure looking only sort of like the paintings. I've spoke with many fans who did say even as a kid they did wonder what happened. This is the same point today as back in the '80's. Over all he's a really great figure and one you shouldn't pass on.

IRON GRENADIER
Iron Grenadier is packaged with Recondo in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Iron Grenadier comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

The Iron Grenadier is a perfect update to the original. Hasbro really did an outstanding job with this sculpt. There's nothing really bad about him and even the idea of him having Cobra logos on him is covered. His filecard tells of how Destro has loaned his Iron Grenadiers to Cobra. All corners were covered and Hasbro did a really great job.

10 Cobras without a doubt! Character continuity was followed, the look of the character was considered and utalized corectly, and we got a truely great figure. Hasbro even went a step further in creating some cool new armor plates that add to his look. Great job Hasbro! Too bad he comes with a completely out of character Recondo.

OVER KILL
Over Kill is packaged with Tunnel Rat in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Over Kill comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

This figure is cool. He is very well sculpted and is a great update to the original. You just have to hate the new figure design to not like this one. Even then I find it hard to believe anyone disliking him. I'd even suggest possibly using this guy as a cool custom idea for a Cobra trooper specialist of some sort.

I'll give Over Kill 10 Cobras. I could name some things such as him looking like a character from Marvel comics or something like that. But isn't that the point? He should look like a comic book character!

RECONDO
Recondo is packaged with Iron Grenadier in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Recondo comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written decently.

You see this figure and a long time fan has to wonder what the heck happened to Recondo. His trademark moustache and hat are gone. This totally ruins the character. This isn't Recondo. Sure the sculpt is great and if he was a new character, there'd be nothing wrong with him. The trouble is that we're suppose to take him in as Recondo. Unless you just want to be different and cut Hasbro some slack, you just can't do it.

Recondo gets just 6 Cobras. He'd get a flat 0 really if his sculpt wasn't so great. He is 100% a nicely sculpted figure and would get a 9 or 10 as an all new character. You just can't take the idea of a character's history and throw it out then expect the figure to be well received. You'll get this figure when you get your Iron Grenadier anyway so just create a new filecard for this guy, or do some custom work to make him Recondo. You'll be all set then.

SCALPEL
Scalpel is packaged with Sgt. Hacker in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Scalpel comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

For quite a long time fans have talked about wanting a Cobra medic. This goes back several years even before seeing Cobra medics used in the comic. Finally we get one, and he's a really great figure too! You can sit and pick out many things about him that gives the figure a cool factor. Great job Hasbro!

Scalpel cuts a perfect 10! He's everything he's suppose to be. He one to add to your collection without any doubts.

SGT. HACKER
Sgt. Hacker is packaged with Scalpel in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Sgt. Hacker comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

I don't know if Hasbro has an idea to make a Mainframe figure later or what but this figure makes me think of him. He has every look of being an updated Mainframe. I'd have liked him as that. Well we get Sgt. Hacker. That's fine because he's an all new character. He has a great look about him and is sculpted very well. One problem is his card art has a slightly different look than the figure. We get that different figure look than the package presentation. It's very minor in this case, but it does exist and can't be over looked if I'm going to give an accurate rating system.

I'll give him 9 1/2 Cobras. The 1/2 only comes off because of his slight alternate look from the package art to the figure. Though this is very minor, it had to be addressed. Something minor like that only counts in the rating, not in my suggestion to buy the figure. You should buy this one because he's very well done.

TUNNEL RAT
Tunnel Rat is packaged with Over Kill in the new green Spy Troops style packaging.

Tunnel Rat comes with his filecard which is attached to the background cardboard. It is written well.

When you see him in the package you get the idea this is a nice figure. Once you take him out of the package, you realize your thoughts were true. He is a great figure. He's very well made from the sculpting to the colors, and even his construction is done well. Everything about the figure is done right, well except 1 thing. He's a little too tall. Since Hasbro has started making some of the figures taller than others and has even suggested that they wanted to present a sense height differences. It's a minor thing, but for some people it could be a big deal.

Tunnel Rat gets none other than 10 Cobras. I could take off 1/2 a point for him being too tall, but that's really pushing it. He's a really cool figure and actually looks pretty cool with his Spy Gear stuff on. You should pick this figure up for your collection.
